Balkans
- There are a number of fabulous women working in the Balkans, especially congregated around the Zagreb comix collective Komikaze. The webzine and books editor of the collective is a tireless woman, Ivana Armanini, and, perhaps in part because of her influence, the Zagreb comics scene has a high representation of women. There’s a dizzying amount of work online . Maya Veselinovic (Serbia), Dunja Jankovic (Croatia/NYC), and Anna Erhlemark (Sweden/Slovenia) are all well worth checking out.
- Helena Klakocar and Magda Dulcic (both from Croatia) are wonderful artists who were big in the Zagreb comics scene in the eighties. I believe Klacocar is still doing work (her style is somewhat similar to Amanda Vahamaki, who was mentioned above).
- If anyone is interested in comics from SE Europe and lives in the Portland, OR, area, I’m curating a show of Balkan comics at Floating World Comics that opens Thursday, October 2nd. All are welcome to come enjoy a night of comics and slivovica!
- There’s AYA and its sequel AYA OF YOP CITY by Marguerite Abouet (writer) and Clement Oubrerie (illustrator). Abouet is from the Ivory Coast (Oubrerie is French).
- Rutu Modan is but one in the group collective of Actus (formerly known as Actus Tragicus) that also includes Batia Kolton and Mira Freidman among others.
- Noa Abrabanel (w) has collaborated with Amitai Sandi (A) On several projects. Probably, the best known of them is Shirley who was published in English and Hebrew like most of Actus’ and Dimona’s books.
- Daniela London-Dekel is another well known comics (strips) artist. She won her publicity after her character “Chamudi” had become a graphic representative of Israel’s largest medical clinics chain.
- Another creators worth mentioning are:
Aviv or, Dorit Mya-Gur , Racheli Rotner , Ofra Amit , Elit Avni-Sharon, and “Isabella” (of the duo Glendon & Isabella) who is a very provocative hard core Comix creator (explicit content).
